Referrals & Billing - Introduction

Remember: The number of referrals you receive greatly depends on customer feedback

AR-1 When one of our clients is in need of legal assistance, they normally contact our office to discuss their case and which attorneys they can select from our list of participating firms. These clients are then referred to an attorney based on their needs. In return for the referral to the attorneys office, participating firms agree to provide ALSI members with a pre-determined amount of complimentary time based on the type of case and ALSI plan they have. Once the amount of free time is exhausted, the firm bills the client directly. NOTE: You are never obligated to accept a referral. You only participate in the areas of law that you wish. These referrals are a source of business that you would not normally receive.

AR-2 Follow these steps when contacted by an ALSI plan member:Step 1: If the case is of interest to you, schedule an initial consultation with the client. During the consultation, determine what course of action is needed to assist the client. Inform the client that you need to discuss the case with ALSI before quoting a fee.Step 2: Contact ALSI to determine the appropriate amount of complimentary time based not only on the case but the member's plan type.Step 3: Contact the client and provide the appropriate retainer or fee information.NOTE: NEVER quote a fee until you discuss the matter with ALSI. Not all ALSI plan members have the same plan which results in different levels of free time for each issue even it it is the same type of case as a previous client.

AR-3 All ALSI members must be provided with a fee, or retainer agreement. The agreement should explain what services will be provided and for what fee, and it must show the appropriate amount of complimentary ALSI time. Usually this appears where the amount due is shown. This area should show a gross amount due followed by an entry for the ALSI plan and finally a net amount due. See this example (click here) NOTE: Remember, all invoices must show the appropriate ALSI plan credit Always call our office to obtain the appropriate ALSI plan credit. All invoices must be pre-approved (mail, fax or email) before being issued to the client.

AR-4 First: You must contact our office each time an ALSI member contacts your to verify the member's status and obtain the correct amount of complimentary time prior to quoting a fee to the client. Be sure to contact us FIRST.Second: All bills, invoices and fee agreements must contain an entry for the appropriate ALSI plan credit and be pre-approved by our office before it is issued to the client. This can be done by mail, email or fax (contact us). Third: Never refer an ALSI client to another attorney. If you do not wish to accept the referral, they must be sent back to our office. NOTE: Never assume two clients with similar cases receive the same amount of complimentary time. We have several different plans with different time levels. Always keep our office informed of any address or phone number changes you may have. You will receive a response to all pre-approval requests within 24 hours.
